Pain (The Journal of the
International Association for the Study of Pain),
June 2004-2008 "Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) is a complex multi-component treatment that can be applied to the problem of chronic pain.... "The evidence indicates that CBT is ore effective than no-treatment (wait list controls) on a wide variety of measures and at least as effective as other treatments on some measures and superior on several of them. "...the evidence for the effectiveness of CBT for chronic pain is considerable...." Fibromyalgia AWARE, June-September 2003 "The way we perceive ourselves, in black and white and multiple shades of gray, influences the way we respond to pain and chronic illness. Self-complexity refers to the way we define ourselves. "High overall self-complexity was associated with better health as assessed by a physician. Having at least one illness-related self aspect was associated with worse pain and functioning. Having a high proportion of negative traits of any kind in one's self-representation was associated with increased psychological distress and catastrophizing. "Comment: This data suggests that the belief structure and the content of individuals' self-representations are associated with health status in individuals with chronic pain. People with fibromyalgia and chronic pain may benefit from working with a psychologist or cognitive behavioral therapist to develop additional positive self aspects." "Psychological treatments used to treat IBS include psychotherapy (dynamic and cognitive-behavioral therapy), relaxation therapy, hypnotherapy , and biofeedback. A review of well-designed treatment studies of IBS supports the superiority of psychological treatment over conventional medical therapy in eight of 13 studies. Follow-up showed that in seven of 13 studies (duration no ine-40 months), psychological treatment maintained superiority over a placebo, indicating that these methods have lasting value." |
