Broadly speaking, emotional intelligence addresses the emotional, personal, social and coping dimensions of intelligence, which are often more important for daily functioning than the more cognitive aspects of intelligence.  It is tactical (immediate functioning), while cognitive intelligence is strategic (long-term).
